Free live music event played right off the front porch of the Swenson House & free food to celebrate the summer! We have this event, in particular for the immediate neighbors of the Swenson House. The neighbors have been great stewards for the property & we are so thankful for that. We know there are so many people in the neighborhood that haven't been in the house or new to the neighborhood & don't know about us. So come on by, the whole town is invited!

The Swenson Family Legacy

Swenson House Historical Society

The historic Swenson House is a magnificent setting for weddings, receptions, parties, teas, meetings retreats, workshops, conferences and other gatherings. After two years of stabilization and restoration work, the Swenson House is now available for events. Built in 1910 by W.G. and Shirley Swenson, the home was built on 58 acres owned by the family. Today the grounds cover a two acre city block. In 1928 the Swenson family completed a major remodeling of the home, adding brick veneer, a grape arbor and many Spanish Colonial Revival architectural features. The Swenson home is unique because so many of the original features have been preserved.

Transfer of Deed

On the evening of August 20, 2019, the Swenson House Historical Society recieved the deed to the property from the Abilene Preservation League.  This Milestone event was marked with a neighborhood celebration including hot dogs & homemade ice cream.  With Neil Tatom acting as MC, Bill Minter took a few minutes to remember the contribution of time & effort made by the recently deceased Jim Stuart (APL) followed by an invocation by Dennis Regan.  Josh Black of the APL presented Janet Payne of The Society with the Deed to the Swenson House Property.  The event was capped with the presentation of a Mayoral Proclomation by Mayor Anthony Williams accompanied by Councilwoman Donna Albus.

501 (c)(3)

The Swenson House Historical Society is officially a 501(c)(3) non-profit.  We are most grateful to Ken Poyner, CPA for his guidance & expertise in getting through this procedure in a most timely manner.  Also a huge thanks to Glen Hall, DDS & Robert Puls for their help with our ByLaws.  The Society is now fully able to solicit funds for the upkeep of this magnificent house.

Snowy School Day @ The Swenson!

A beautiful & quiet snow day in Abilene, TX!  5-8" of snow is expected.  If the sun doesn't come out before the sun goes down, it may be another day off from school tomorrow, too!  I'm sure that the major roads are ok, but some of the neighborhood roads are going to refreeze & be a bit treacherous.  Check back tomorrow, hopefully there will be a few night shots of the house with snow & our new LEDs!

Some Nite Time shots from Swenson Boo Bash & Haunted Abilene….

This is our first year of the Swenson Boo Bash.  We are very excited to have another event off of the Halloween theme decorations.  The decorations are pretty elaborate & setting everything up as well as protecting the House, is very time consuming.  We know that most adults, especially if you have had kids in the house or have had young kids that are high schoolers now, you are in the routine of buying 4+ bags of candy having fun handing it out to the kids, maybe having mini block parties in the drive. Well, we want to give you an alternative that we think is a little bit more fun.  Kids don't need all that candy, anyway!  Have some adult fun at a costume party (the best kind) having some great food, drinks & entertainment in the best Halloween decorated building in town, the Swenson House!

Check out the website for more info!

Haunted Abilene Tickets For Sale!

This is our flagship event of the year.  Wizards & Witches is our theme.  We are so thankful for the turnout last year & for our sponsors that really play a huge role in the success of the event.

We are looking for volunteers, for set-up & to participant in the haunting experience.  This next week we will be ramping up our committees & reaching out to those who have expressed interest in helping.  So, hang tight, we definitely want you & need you.  Sponsoring local school tickets or the family outreach centers is a great way to bless the community with your generosity.  It really is a great experience & the kids love it.  We thank you in advance.  If you are a sponsor, bring out some yard signs, set up a table with some of your marketing material & join the fun out in yard.  You can also sponsor the "Corn Maze," "Cemetery," "Trolley Ride," etc.

We will have food trucks, Fox Coffee, it is a blast!  It is the best Haunted House in...... Texas?!

Come & take a tour of the Swenson House!

We would love to have you come by & take a tour of the Swenson House.  We have guided tours by our docents or our very passionate board members.  You do have to call & schedule your appointment.  Often we can do the tour the same day as your phone call with a reasonable notice.  We really think the Swenson House is something you have to see in person.  We have A/C in both the upstairs & the downstairs for a comfortable experience even in the height of summer.  We are open to bus tours or groups that come from the Metroplex, Austin or San Antonio.  There is some other great attractions here in Abilene to fill your day & make it back to your own bed all in the same day!
